About WHS
Founded in 1965, Willamette Humane Society serves the animals and people of Marion and Polk County through our mission: Promoting the welfare of animals through leadership, education and action. This mission really means that on a daily basis, we do the following:
- Provide a temporary shelter for discarded, abused, abandoned and lost animals.
- Complete homes by matching companion animals with people.
- Lead our community by teaching respectful, compassionate treatment of animals.
We have a staff of 35 people, and the equivalent in hours of another 25 people through the generous contributions of volunteers. We shelter approximately 9,000 animals each year.
Willamette Humane Society is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We are not affiliated with any other local or national animal welfare groups and we receive no government tax dollars or financial support from state or national humane organizations. Our operating budget of $2 million is funded by our fees for service and by generous donors through annual or estate gifts.
